What will you learn?
This course will cover the required competencies for Pre-K special educators as outlined by Pennsylvania Department of Education. Particular emphasis will be placed on those competencies which are most relevant to early childhood educators including:
- Phonological & Phonemic Awareness
- Vocabulary Development
- Listening Comprehension.
- Oral Language Development

Competencies
Review information regarding seven PA state structured literacy competencies including: essential principles and practices, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics and word recognition, fluency, vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension, and written expression.
Language Processing
Identify and describe the 5 language processing components of structured literacy: phonology, orthography, syntax, morphology, and semantics.
Systematic Processes
Understand the nature of structured literacy being explicit, systematic and teacher directed.
Phonological & Phonemic Awareness
Understand the development and hierarchy of phonological and phonemic awareness skills and identify activities to develop these skills.
Vocabulary Development
Review and apply considerations for the role of vocabulary development and oral language development.
Listening Comprehension
Review importance of listening comprehension skills to developing readers and identify activities enhance this skill development.
